Mrs. Dorothy Miller's Obituary
As Scripture reminds us, “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who
will transform our lowly body to be like His glorious body” (Philippians 3:20). Dorothy McGehee Miller, age 92, a
resident of Baton Rouge, peacefully entered eternal rest on January 14, 2025. She would want us to find comfort in
this truth, living each day with the hope of heaven and the peace it brings.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, Shirley James Miller, and her parents, William Herchel McGehee and
Gladys Lawler McGehee. She is survived by her devoted daughter Martha Miller Rome (Jeffrey), her
granddaughter, Juliana Rome Meyers (Stephen), and great-grandchildren, Sophie James, Miller Alane, and Joseph
Stephen Meyers.
Dorothy lived most of her life in Bogalusa and always considered it her home. After graduating from Bogalusa High
School, she pursued her passion for nursing, earning her nursing degrees from Hotel Dieu School of Nursing and
Northwestern Louisiana University. Her commitment to lifelong learning led her to attain a Masters Degree in
Counseling from Louisiana Baptist University.
Her love of the nursing profession led her to begin teaching at Northshore Technical Community College where she
would eventually retire as the Director of Nursing. Her unwavering dedication to both her students and patients
set a powerful example for educators and healthcare professionals across Louisiana. Throughout her distinguished
career, she viewed her work in nursing as a ministry—dedicated to serving others and sharing God’s love with all.
Whether tending to patients or guiding students, her mission was to touch lives and inspire others, always with the
hope of advancing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Her commitment to excellence in education was recognized when she was honored as Instructor of the Year by the
Region II Division of the Louisiana Vocational Association in 1977 and named Outstanding Teacher of the Year by
the Louisiana Vocational Association in 1990. In 1996 she was selected as one of the Great 100 Nurses of Louisiana
by the New Orleans District Nurses Association.
She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church, Bogalusa, where she served in various leadership roles,
particularly serving with the youth for over twenty-five years. Believing in the importance of serving her
community, she was actively involved in numerous local boards and committees, including the Bogalusa
Community Medical Center, Louisiana State Nurses Association, Washington Parish American Heart Association,
Childcare Center of Bogalusa, Regina Coeli Child Development Center of St. Tammany Parish, Nellie Byers Training
Center, Bogalusa Mental Health Clinic, and Washington Parish EMS Council. Her unwavering dedication to
improving her community earned her the distinguished honor of being named Bogalusa Citizen of the Year in 2002.
Dorothy was laid to rest in a private graveside service at Hillview Memorial Gardens, beside her beloved soulmate,
James. The family encourages you to celebrate her life by remembering the joy, love, and impact she brought to
all who knew her. Her memory may be honored by cherishing the moments shared and continuing their legacy.
The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the nurses and staff of The Pearl at Jamestown and St. Joseph
Hospice in Baton Rouge. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church, 541 Avenue F,
Bogalusa, LA, 70427.
