“Good things come in small packages,” is an idiom people used to use all the time. Anyone familiar with my aunt Yvonne and our relatives in the Malley family certainly would not argue that point; though I doubt anyone would truly refer to her as “small.” She was not small to me during most of the time I spent with her as I was a child and she was an adult and thus by definition she was not small.
My father was her younger brother. “Billy Wayne” she called him, though he referred to himself as “Bill” He always told everyone how pretty his sister was and truly, she was a very pretty lady. He admired her success and her intelligence and was very proud of her. Until his death at the age of 39; visiting my grandparents in their home in Bogalusa and spending some time playing with Susan at Aunt Yvonne’s lovely home was routine. (Frankie was too cool for us little girls as he was a teenager LOL).
Daddy died when I was 11 and after that I regret to say that our contact was not as frequent but through the years when I got older I would come to Bogalusa from time to time. Aunt Yvonne was glad to see me and there was always a hot cup of coffee, a seat at the kitchen table and maybe a piece of pound cake sometimes there with my name on it. She was always ready to catch up on what was going on with me, my family and my life. We would sit at that table, talk about our shared times and heritage and solve the world’s problems.
We connected through email on a regular basis for a while when we both discovered the internet. When I got a cell phone and she was still living at home, I would call her and sometimes we would discuss the Sunday School lesson for the coming week when we found out it was the same for both of us. “I hope you know that I am praying for you,” she would say. Sometimes we prayed on the phone. I miss those times. There is no such thing as someone having too many people who love them enough to pray for them regularly. She was a jewel and I know without a doubt that there is much rejoicing in heaven as she joins her beloved family there.
